This amazing stone artifact of the ages comes from Minnesota lake country and is about the size of a large clenched fist. It has a unique primitive facial figure (gorilla shaped crested head with nostrils & pupils/eyes showing) on one side of the rock. On another side of the rock , there is a footprint (baby foot size) created on the surface with an extraordinary (almost photographic) facial figure with spiked hair that appears to have possible horns with horizontal lines within the horns. It has a hominoidal (possibly sphinx-like) figure on its forehead. Above that appears a warrior (noble or chief?) with either a helmet or headdress (notice bird & beak on helmet) and carrying a round shield & spear. A similar figure carrying a shield follows and more shields can be seen (obvious assumption - more warriors) . Next to the mouth is another small hominoidal facial figure that seems to be ape-like in appearance. Next to that figure on the outside of the footprint is a facial effigy with a unique slanted eye structure, high cheekbones and a pointed headpiece (or section of headpiece)  (shown in box on highlighted version - imagery is better in other photo though). It's wondrous that this ancient artwork was done in such detail in areas that are about the size of a pencil eraser (micro-art)! In addition -  a handprint appears next to the small hominoidal figure and over the left eye of the larger facial effigy. Also - way at the top above the footprint is a similar small version of the "gorilla-shaped" facial effigy (hard to see in photos) from the other side of the rock artifact. There seems to be other micro-engravings within and outside the footprint as well as on the other side of the rock.

Scanning the rock exposed the true ancient artistry that would be hard to see otherwise because of the weathering of time. The highlighted image helps show "some" of the imagery but the resolution isn't as good for some reason as the non-highlighted images.. Hopefully - you will have a quality flat panel computer display monitor that exposes the intricate artistic details on the images as it does make a big difference.

Originally this artifact was thought to be Bigfoot/Sasquatch legend related because of the gorilla shaped head on one side of the rock and the footprint on the other side. Scanning the rock opened the door to additional possible origins/themes. The artist himself may also be portrayed on the rock plus the additional effigies create more possibilities. The larger facial effigy within the footprint has human qualities in appearance and the handprint over the left eye (hand-eye) has been used by various ancient Native American (and World) cultures depicting humans. The hand-eye motif is often found in art from the tribes of the Northwest coast. The spiky hair could be a representation of manifestations of spiritual power as seen on Ojibwe birch-bark scroll and rock pictographs. Celts also commonly spiked their hair.  Regarding the possible horns - the Algonquin Indians of Northeastern United States and Canada have a myth of the manitou who are a stoic race of faerie folk who live in tribes similar to the indians that can be recognized by the small horns or antlers on their forehead. The Ojibwe also have horned figures in their rock art created by shamans and some theorize it resembles self-portrait. The Ojibwe believe there are spirits in everything and referred them to as "manitou" as well. Ancient celts worshipped the "horned god - Cernunnos" and celtic rock art commonly depicted horned figures. The small facial effigy on the forehead of the larger face does have a slight primate type of look and the small facial figure next to the mouth looks very ape-like. The warrior, noble or chief carrying a round shield with helmet/headdress is obviously very human in appearance. It's harder to see the  2nd warrior (except for the shield) that follows that one and what appears to be a whole force of warriors with shields. The apparent bird on the helmet/headdress could actually be a raven. The raven was extremely important among the native peoples of the Northwest coast (Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Bella Bella, and Kwakiutl) who viewed it as the creator of the world and daylight bringer. It also should be noted that helmets and shields were also used by these ancient tribes of the Northwest coast - including helmets with ravens on them. Another interesting note is the ancient celts also utilized ravens on their armor including the raven helmet that was found at Ciumesti, Romania. The spiked hair on the facial figure also points towards the celts. A number of people believe the celtic people were here in America and there is a strong possibity that the warriors depicted are indeed celts. The Kwakiutl also have a name for Bigfoot - "Bukwas" or Wild Man of the Woods. The small facial effigy outside the footprint is also very human in appearance and the slanted eye/high cheekbone structure also is common among the art from native tribes from the Northwest Coast.

Zoomorphic and anthropomorphic qualities seem to be both exhibited in this amazing piece of rock art. There is a good chance this rock artifact is describing an event(s) and a creature that the artist witnessed.
